Is it human nature for people to be close minded on ideas, thoughts, views that aren't theirs?
It seems to me that it is. People automatically assume that if you have a different view on a particular thing, that you're wrong. Is that wrong for us to be like that? or should we do more to change and to consider the ideas and views of others?
Ummm I do think its nature. People have a tendency to stick with what they were first taught or first influence. Anyways, think more positively about this because I was asked this questioned before. It used to bother me, but now not really. I try them to tell them my point and then if they still are adamant about their view, I just let it go. Because through the passage of time they might realize that I was right, or maybe they will live their life happily without any change or maybe after all I was the one that wrong. I kinda take it as my chance to look at ideas in a different person's shoes... its quite interesting sometimes.
ReplyDeleteIt's like... mental self defense to stick to your own point of views. Plus there's pride and all that stuff. It doesn't make it ok, but you can't really be surprised by it.
ReplyDeletePlus Texas is pretty... Proud? Close minded? Although Austin is pretty good compared to everywhere else.
Just pose everything as non offending hypotheticals for intellectual exploration, and maybe eventually we'll get used to thinking more critically.
I think half the problem is typically bad communication skills, and the other half pride. Communicating without pushing anyone's buttons is so... restrained, it's very difficult to do. And most people don't even think to do it.
Unfortunately, sometimes you just have to cut your losses. That's the hardest to do. Probably most painful too.
But it's better than letting escalate into something catastrophic if you ask me.
